This handmade, wire wrapped, sterling silver pendant is made with an natural stone cabochon called, Astrophyllite. It is a rare stone from Russia. The stone is white and black with ribbons and bits of flashy, twinkling, metallic material which display nicely as the stone moves in the light. I like to think of it as Christmas tinsel. The ribbon color is a cross between red, bronze and copper. This particular stone has more than is seen in the photos. As with most chatoyant stones, it is hard to photograph. I prefer the darker variety, like this one, which is harder to get, because the flashes show so much better against the dark background. This is a large, flashy, high quality stone.
I wrapped this unusual, asymmetric shape to balance the stone in heavy sterling silver wire (not silver filled, plated or coated). I added a heavy sterling silver bail which will allow the pendant to move in the light. As it dangles and catches the light the metallic bronze ribbons will flash.
The last photo is an attempt at capturing the fire in the stone with a photograph. All the coppery bits are flashy according to the angle of the light.
