This handmade, sterling silver pendant is made with a natural stone cabochon. This bright blue stone is a gemstone quality colored, natural lapis lazuli aka lapis from Afghanistan where the best Lapis is found today. The edges include some of the matrix from the host rock creating an interesting natural contrast.
I made this wire wrapped setting with heavy sterling silver wire- not plated, filled or coated wire. This is a smaller pendant which includes lots of detail in the wrap. I added a prefabricated bail of sterling silver.
Please note: there is a very, very small spot on the stone that looks like a scratch, but is not. It does not distract. It is a natural low spot.

More About Lapis:
Lapis, or, more correctly, Lapis lazuli, is an opaque stone comprised primarily of diopside and lazurite. Lapis is a deep dark blue, often with flecks of golden pyrite which makes it appear to be a vision of a starry night sky. Lapis may also contain white streaks or areas of lighter blue color. Lapis is one of the softer stones between a 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale. It takes care in cutting and polishing. Precautions should be taken in wearing it, such as avoiding household chemicals, high temperatures and strong pressure.
Lapis has been a cherished gem since ancient times. It was used for paint pigments (ultramarine), make up and all manner of carved things including jewelry. The best lapis still comes from northeast Afghanistan where it is highly valued. The value of lapis varies widely with the best being a pure deep ultramarine blue with a beautiful dispersion of pyrite and no white. The least will be a mottled blue, too dark or too light or with too much garish pyrite and white veins.
Lapis is the stone of truth and friendship and promotes harmony in relationships.
