This handmade, sculpted wire pendant is made with a natural stone cabochon of dark rose pink gel rhodochrosite from Peru. This type of rhodochrosite is very different from what is seen in Argentina. This is a semi translucent (gel) stone with mottled lighter pink "clouds". This gel variety is unique to Peru, as far as I know, and somewhat hard to find.
This wire sculpted pendant is made with pure copper wire with a hand applied antique patina. I think this style lends itself beautifully to Steampunk (Steam Punk) fashions. This is a beautiful "Victorian style" setting. To further the antique look, I added a small amount of green verdigris patina to the deepest recesses, just as an antique would have.
These sculpted settings are one of kind because you design them as you go. One has to follow the flow of the wire and stone and work with where it is leading you. These are fun to do. Though they are not in my typical style, I do enjoy doing them.

More About Rhodochrosite:
Rhodochrosite, also called Inca Rose, is probably the prettiest of all minerals (calcite group of minerals) with its deep red and hot pink crystals. It is sought after around the world with the crystal forms commanding extremely high prices.
Rhodochrosite is soft, with a Mohs Hardness of 3.5 - 4, which makes it popular for carving. It has a pearly or vitreous luster.
The pink color of Rhodochrosite is caused by manganese. It is often banded with white (probably calcite). Rhodochrosite is found in Argentina, Peru, Colorado and Montana and Quebec. The Capillitas mine, Argentina is renowned for its stalactites and stalagmites containing Rhodochrosite. The Capillitas mine in Argentina is also where the best material for cabochons comes from. The mine has been rumored to have been closed and prices for the better material has been skyrocketing. This quality material is now being called rare. The market is flooded with fake rhodochrosite. Often they are dyed lace agates and can appear by photograph to be real. I was fooled once into buying one. The biggest difference which will be easy to determine is that the fake agate will be much harder than Rhodochrosite, which is quite soft. The pink color of Rhodochrosite is permanent and will not bleed off or fade, either.
